What are some factors which determine the quality of particular nursing program?

The first factor in selecting a nursing school is to ensure that the RN or LVN program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and accredited by one of the leading national organizations. The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission is one of the well known accrediting organizations for nursing programs.

Each state approved nursing program in Virginia must provide a minimum number of training and classroom hours. You would want to select a program that goes above the minimum requirement of educational hours, especially when it comes to clinical training. To find out what the breakdown of instructional and hands-on training for a particular nursing program in Virginia, contact and speak with the program coordinator.

Another important aspect to consider when deciding on a particular nursing school is the instructor to student ratio for clinical experiences. The lower the ratio, the more time an instructor has to spend with each student. The Virginia State Board of Nursing regulations do not allow an instructor to student ratio greater than ten to one.

When reviewing different nursing programs try to compare the instructor qualifications. What educational level and experience do they have? A registered nursing program offered at a university may employ instructors which hold a graduate degree in nursing and have many years of experience.

A nursing program conducted at a community college may have instructors which hold only a four-year degree in nursing and meet the minimum requirements when it comes to practice experience. Where is the clinical practice conducted? Is there variety when it comes to practice in the clinical setting? To provide the best training, a nursing program should include clinical experiences in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, home health care, and clinics.

It is a good idea to visit a nursing school prior to applying for enrollment into their nursing program. This way you clearly see the educational resources you might have available as a student. Does the school have spacious classrooms, is there a nursing laboratory with the latest equipment, how well equipped is the computer laboratory?

When choosing a nursing program always take into consideration the school's NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN passing rate. This is a good indicator of how well the college or university has prepared its students for the state examination. If possible, talk to other students who have completed a nursing program at that institution. Ask them their opinion regarding the quality of education they received, the instructors, and the overall satisfaction with the RN or LPN training program.
